Make sure you're connected to the same network as your Time Capsule/backup sever

Look for the time Machine icon in the menubar and choose "backup now."
- If you don't see the Time Machine icon in my screenshot in your menu bar, click on the the Apple icon at the very top left of your screen.
- Select System Preferences
- In System Preferences, select Time Machine.

Tick the checkbox to "show time machine in menu bar." You'll then see the Time Machine icon in your menubar.
For extra credit, those of you who prefer the command line can kick off a backup by issuing the following command in the terminal:
sudo tmutil startbackup --auto
