1Password has the built-in ability to act as an authenticator app for websites that offer 2-step verification. We'll walk through the process of enabling 2-step verification and setting up 1Password to act as the authenticator.
For the purpose of this tutorial, we'll assume that your G Suite administrator has turned on the enforcement of 2-Step Verification and you're setting it up for the first time.
Please note: if you've already setup your G Suite account on your phone or other devices, you'll likely be required to log back in once you setup 2-Step Verification.
In addition, if you have any programs that don't support 2-Step verification, you'll need to create a "single use" or "App Password." You can read instructions on how here: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en
You'll likely see a screen like this when you attempt to login. Start by clicking "enroll."
Enter a phone number where you can receive a phone call or text and click Next.
Enter the code you receive in your phone call or text and click next.
Now turn on 2-Step Verification.
You'll be taken to your 2-Step Verification settings page. Click "Set Up" by "Authenticator App."
Choose "iPhone" and click Next
A QR code will be displayed. Leave this window up and visible and launch your 1Password. Find your entry for your G Suite account and click edit. (Don't yet have your G Suite password in 1Password? Check out this tutorial on how to add it: https://support.1password.com/save-login-manually/)
From the "new field," select "One-Time Password" from the drop down menu.
A QR code icon will be displayed after you select one-time password option above.
Mac Users:
Click on the QR code icon to reveal a blue "frame" in which you need to center the barcode previously displayed by Google.
Once you drag the frame to center the barcode, the blue frame will turn green and then disappear. You'll get a pop up prompt from 1Password that it's copied a 1-Time password into your clipboard. Click save.
Windows Users:
Click the QR code icon, select "from my screen" from the drop-down menu that appears. 1Password will momentarily disappear to capture the QR code. Click "save" after it fills in.
Click next on the G Suite page with the barcode.
Now click on the line where you need to enter to code and paste. You can press command and v or control and v on a Mac or PC (respectively) or right-click and choose "paste." This will paste in the 1-time passcode 1Password generated.
Click verify once you've pasted the value in.
If all goes well, click "done" and you're finished setting up 2-Step Verification in the eyes of G Suite.
Once finished in G Suite, return to 1Password and, if you haven't already, make sure you hit save to finish setting it up as your G Suite authenticator.
You may ask "why not just use the phone like in the first step?" Good question! In a nutshell, using a phone is the least secure of the 2-Step Verification options. Once everyone has setup 2-Step Verification, we'll be disabling the phone option as a way to increase safety.
