Accepting an invite to a shared Google Drive file or folder in fairly straight forward, but getting them to show up in your Google Drive File Stream is a bit unintuitive. Here's a quick tutorial.

When someone shares a file or folder with you, you'll receive and invite that looks similar to this.

Opening the invite, we see a bit more.

Notice the invites comes from "drive-shared-noreply@google.com." A bit further down, you'll see who actually invited you. In this case, "Googledrive@indinero.com."

Click "Open" to accept the invite and view the files in your "Shared With Me" section of Google Drive.

Important! Notice from the "path bar" at the top how this newly shared folder in under "Shared With Me." While it's perfectly fine right there, if you want it to show up in the Finder or Windows Explorer, you'll need to take an extra step.

  1. Click on "Shared with me" on the left hand side.
  2. Locate the folder (or file) you'd like to show up in Google Drive File Stream
  3. Drag it into My Drive.

Now, that folder/file that's been shared with you will show up under "Shared with me" and under "My Drive." Anything under the "My Drive" folder will show up in your Google Drive for easy access from your computer via the Finder or Windows File Explorer.

Not to worry! By putting it in in "My Drive," you haven't moved it for the original owner. It remains unchanged for anyone who has access to the folder. Think of adding a folder/file to My Drive from Shared with me as adding a shortcut or alias of the shared item. It doesn't affect the original item. Rather, it's just a pointer back to the original in "Shared with me."
