For the uninitiated, the three most popular built-in Apple Apps look like this:
Generally, using Outlook for iOS is an easier and more full-featured way to access your Office 365 account on your iPhone. That said, there are advantages to having the account setup with the native apps so you can take advantage of "name lookup" when someone in your address book texts or calls you or you use Siri to add things to your calendar.
If you already have your Office 365 account setup in your default apps and 2 factor authentication gets enabled, you have three options to make it work again, though sometimes (often times, really), only the last works. Let's go in order of easiest to most tedious.
First, after 2FA gets enabled on your O365 account, you'll get a message like below. Don't be tempted to enter your email password, because it won't work!
If you're lucky....
- On the phone, go to Settings.
- Tap Mail
- Tap Accounts
- Select your Office 365 account
If you see an option at the top that reads "re-enter password." Tap that and you'll be taken to Microsoft's website where you can log back in with your password and 2FA code. You should be back on the road again! Easy Peasy!
If you don't see that option to re-enter your password, sometimes creating a single use "App Password" will be enough to get the job done.
- Read this article on how to create an App password: https://bioniccat.freshdesk.com/a/solutions/articles/3000100788
- Create an App Password and copy it
- On the phone, go to Settings.
- Tap Mail
- Tap Accounts
- Select your Office 365 account
- Tap your email address
- Paste your App password into the password field and click Done
If all else fails, you'll need to remove your account and add it back.
This is fairly quick process, but to do it correctly, follow all the steps below.
- First, use this article to take note of how your default accounts are set.
- On the phone, go to Settings.
- Tap Mail
- Tap Accounts
- Select your Office 365 account
- Click "Delete Account"
- Tap "Add Account"
- Choose "Microsoft Exchange"
- Enter your email address and a description and click Next
- When prompted, choose the option to "Sign In." Do not choose the "Configure Manually" option.
- You'll be redirected to the Microsoft website to login with your password and 2FA code
- Once authenticated, choose the services to enable (eg. mail, contacts, calendars...) and click save.
- Finally, revisit the first step and make sure your default accounts are set to what they originally were. Often times when add/removing an account, the default accounts will change causing a big mess down the road.
