Now that Apple's newest operating system, Monterey, has been out for a while, it's safe to upgrade to it.

Before doing so, please make sure your laptop is plugged into power and the screen remains open. We don't want it sleeping during the upgrade!

Note that this upgrade will take 45-60 minutes once the install starts. Depending on your internet speed, it may take 30 minutes or more to download the upgrade before the install even begins. We generally recommend you start this process shortly before the end of the day or shortly before lunch.

To begin, head to the Apple menu in the top left hand corner of your computer screen. Select System Preferences and then select Software Update.

Software Update will check for available upgrades and, when ready, display and "upgrade now" button. Click that to begin. You may continue to work on your computer while the upgrade downloads. You'll be prompted to start the upgrade once the download is ready. Once the upgrade begins, you'll be unable to use your computer. Your computer might also restart several times during the upgrade.
