If you're a Google Workspace user, you can use Google Drive to sync certain folders on your computer up to Google Drive for safekeeping. Using this setup, any folders you choose get synced from your computer to your personal Google "My Drive" folder in a special area called "Computers." This data is not accessible to others in your organization.

Some (including Bionic Cat) may not consider this a true backup because of the lack of version control and ability to restore deleted files older than 30 days, but it's better than nothing if you otherwise don't have a backup.

Let's get started!

Using Spotlight or LaunchPad, search for and launch Google Drive.

If you're on a PC, use the Start Menu to search for and launch Google Drive

One launched, log into Google Drive with your Google Workspace login and password. (Assuming you're already logged into Gmail, this should happen mostly automatically for you.)

Once logged in, select Google Drive from your menubar, click on the gear icon and select preferences.

If you're on a PC, right click on the Google Drive icon in the System Tray.

From the left hand side, select your computer and then click "Add Folder"

We recommend selecting your Desktop, Documents and Downloads for backup at a minimum. If there are other folders outside of those two that you save important data in, select those as well.

When selecting folders to backup, leave the preferences selected as shown below and click Done.

Click "Save" at the bottom right and you'll be syncing!

Ever need to restore something or access a file from your computer while on the go? Head to drive.google.com and look under the "computers" listing on the left. You can access any of your files there. If you make a change online, that change will be synced back to your computer when next online.

Note that deleted files will stay in the trash for 30 days, after which they're automatically deleted. Also, you can access older versions of a document by right-clicking on the document in Google Drive and choosing "Manage Versions." Once again, versions are only kept for 30 days so you won't be able to revert to anything older than that.

Happy Syncing!
